Minibeast adding 11.6.20

Good morning Nursery,

I hope you are all doing well and have got your brain boxes turned on today as today's activity is a challenge.

As we are learning all about minibeasts this week, one minibeast that we are looking at today has lots and lots of spots on their body, can you guess what creature it is? That's right...it's a ladybird!

Ladybird's have many spots. Today your challenge is to find out how many spots they have altogether.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. If grown ups or children could draw a ladybird (this could be a circle with a line down the middle, but with no spots yet)
  2. Roll this interactive dice to give the ladybird it's spots: https://www.random.org/dice/?num=2 press 'roll dice' for it to roll 2 dice.
  3. Once you have rolled both dice, add the correct amount of spots to your ladybird on either side of the line e.g. I rolled and got a 2 and a 3, I put 2 dots on one half of my ladybird and 3 on the other.
  4. Now that the ladybird has all of its spots, can you tell your grown how many spots there are altogether by counting one at a time.
  5. Grown up's if you could model the language of adding to the children e.g. we had 2 in this half of the ladybird and 3 in this half, when we add them altogether the total number of spots is 5.
  6. You can repeat this as many times as you like and try rolling different numbers each time.

Good luck my little mathematicians!

Have fun adding!

Lots of love,

Miss Vondy and Mrs Costello x
